Critical Care Nursing Course

In collaboration with HealthOne Hospital partners, the WELLS Center has developed and piloted an 80 hour course that has been designed to supplement the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses' online ECCO with hands-on simulation experience and other interactive learning activities. The ECCO course was chosen as the curricular basis of this practical application because of being considered the "gold standard" for critical care education in the Colorado region.

Use of state-of-the art high-fidelity computerized human simulations, the VH Dissector™, and high-tech medical and media equipment are combined in this course to provide the RN the opportunity to experience care of the critically ill patient in a safe environment with no risk to patients. Experience will include care of patients with critical disorders of the following physiological systems: cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, endocrine, hematologic, renal, gastrointestinal, and multi-system disorder.

This course will be held at the WELLS Center on the Fitzsimons Campus, and will be taught by registered nurses with certification and experience in the area of Critical Care. It is organized in four hour sessions that allows flexibility in scheduling and can be scheduled to meet the needs of individuals or groups from specific medical centers.

To participate in this course the participant must hold a current RN license, must have successfully completed the AACN's online ECCO and Basic EKG Interpretation Course prior to enrolling, and must demonstrate proficiency in rhythm strip interpretation. Exceptions can be made with approval.

Content:
Upon completion of the course, the RN will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Effectively communicate with the critical care patient, their family, the physician (SBAR) and other critical care team members.
  • Assess the critical care patient, and develop a plan of care.
  • Monitor the critical care patient's condition, use monitoring machines, monitor the family dynamics, and the critical care team dynamics.
  • Manage the critical care patient's airway and ventilator equipment.
  • Manage the pain and sedation of the critical care patient.
  • Utilize appropriate medication to manage the critical care patient.
  • Provide nutritional support for the critical care patient.
  • Safely transport a critical care patient.
  • Integrate patient safety goals into all aspects of patient care.
  • Perform procedures specific to care of the critical care patient with disorders of one or more of the following systems:  cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, endocrine, gastrointestinal, renal, and hematologic.

Participant Comments:

"Practice makes perfect! Great learning opportunity"

"WOW – this program is amazing and gave me a new perspective (literally!) on anatomy. I'm so excited to work with it."

"Great exercise to help us understand that not everyone is savable, and how to handle that."

Operating Room Nursing Course

In collaboration with HealthOne Hospital partners, the WELLS Center has developed an 80 hour course that has been designed to expand the orientation materials provided in PeriOp 101, which is an online OR orientation course developed and offered by the Association of Operating Room Nurses.  The OR Nursing Course builds on the basic orientation of the AORN content.

Use of state-of-the art high-fidelity computerized human simulations, the VH Dissector™, and high-tech medical and media equipment are combined in this course to give the RN the opportunity to experience care of the pre-operative patient in a safe environment and to enhance OR nursing education by providing the advanced beginner (6 months - 12 months orientation experience) with simulation experience as a supplement to their OR education and orientation. The OR Nursing Course will identify simulation situations where new OR nurses have honed routine tasks and skills performed in the OR, and provide simulation experience to develop critical thinking skills to independently function during emergent situations and critical events in the OR.

This course will be held at the WELLS Center on the Fitzsimons Campus, and will be taught by registered nurses with certification and experience in the area of Peri-Operative care. It is organized in four hour sessions that allows flexibility in scheduling and can be scheduled to meet the needs of individuals or groups from specific medical centers.

To participate in this course participants may be a new graduates or nurses with experience in other areas of nursing.  It is recommended that participants have completed their NCLEX exams prior to beginning the course, or must hold a current RN license.  Participants should complete the PeriOp 101 and basic hospital orientation to the OR prior to enrollment in the OR Nursing Course.  Exceptions can be made with approval.

Content:
Upon completion of the course, the RN will demonstrate the ability to:

  • Effectively communicate with the pre-operative patient, their family, physicians (SBAR) and other care team members involved with the pre-operative patient.
  • Demonstrate clinical reasoning in the assessment of the patient and prioritize and organize a plan for the patients operative care.
  • Demonstrate advanced level ability (knowledge and skill) of professional operative nursing in personal surgical attire, physical preparation of an operating room, and interpersonal communication as a member of an operative nursing team.
  • Integrate the elements of professional operative nursing with the the technical elements of care within a framework of freedom from injury and freedom from infection.
  • Monitor a patient receiving moderate sedation/analgesia, including but not limited to basic-to-intermediate monitoring knowledge and skills as recommended by AORN, patient interaction skill, and medication safety practices.
  • Manage the care of a patient receiving moderate sedation/analgesia and local anesthesia with the patient experiencing an emergent situation.
  • Discuss the elements of Universal Protocol according to The Joint Commission, and the importance of Universal Protocol for any patient in need of an operative or other invasive procedure.
  • Discuss Recommended Practices for Perioperative Nursing in caring for pediatric patients.
  • Use various and appropriate developmental care strategies to assess, plan, and implement operating room nursing care of the pre-operative patient and his or her family/significant others.
  • Perform procedures specific to care of the pre-operative patient with disorders of one or more of the following systems:  cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, endocrine, gastrointestinal, renal, and hematologic.

WELLS Center On-site/Off-Site Simulation Events

The WELLS Center offers simulation opportunities to the entire healthcare community through fee-for-service events.  These custom designed events take place at the WELLS Center or on-site at the participating facility.  Prior to the event, facility educators are encouraged to attend the Simulation Development and Facilitation Workshop offered free of charge through grant sponsorship.  After the workshop, the educators meet with the Center's simulation experts to design the simulation experience that is specific to the desired outcomes.  A second meeting with the WELLS staff provides the educators an opportunity to walk through the simulation and refine the developed scenarios.

The day of the event, the facility educators and staff either come to the WELLS Center for the event or the WELLS Center staff transport the high-fidelity mannequins and other high tech equipment to the facility. The event is facilitated by the facility educators with the technical assistance and coaching from the WELLS Center experts.

The cost of these events is $250.00 per hour with a four hour minimum. Included in the costs are the custom design and the preparation by the WELLS Center staff.  Transportation time and mileage is an extra cost.
